Why Gibson couldn't turn down the Thunder's call this NBL1 South season

Trying out for the North West Thunder was always on Logan Gibson's radar, but scheduling conflicts made that goal impossible.  As a result, the 17-year-old had accepted that the NBL1 South may not have been for him this season.  But "constant messages" from coach Sam Armstrong helped change his mind and landed him a place on the roster for the team's upcoming campaign.  "I'm very keen for it and with the different levels that are in Tassie, this is as high as it can get," Gibson said.  "I'm keen to play against guys who have been in the NBL and play with guys that are at that level now. I'm keen to see how a professional environment operates.  [Sam's] belief in how I play and my role, I think that was the main thing. He said we're like a big family and made me feel really welcome."

Gibson, who hails from Launceston, is no stranger to his new teammates having played against "most of those guys" in the NWBU.  The 205-centimetre wing said he was most excited to immerse himself in a semi-professional environment and play alongside the likes of Kye Savage, Lachie Barker, and Archie Woodhill.  "And then learning to play like a pro on the court, and it's good to do that with and against some pro athletes so I'm prepared for college in a year's time."

Gibson has started his 2025 Union campaign on a high, averaging 21.7 points across his seven games for Devonport.  He scored a season-high 35 points in the Warriors' round nine win against Smithton.  Despite a "bit of a slow start" to the season, Gibson was optimistic about the Warriors' chances.

"I just want to learn different pro habits and how to go about recovery and how to look after myself," he said.  "We've got some new names in, everyone is settling in and learning each other's play styles," he said.   "We're top four right now and I think we're going to make a big push for finals."

Gibson and the Thunder will begin their 2025 NBL1 South campaign on Saturday, March 29, when they host the Hobart Chargers at Ulverstone Sport and Leisure Centre.  He isn't the only new face in the Thunder line-up, with the club signing American Tyler Harris, Lieb Yat, Bang Majok, and Elijah Duol.
