The men’s Forestville Eagles are powering through the start of the NBL1 Central season, with forward Greg Mays being a standout.
NBL1 Central analyst Tristan Prentice believes the Eagles’ strong recruitment and preparation has helped land themselves at the top of the ladder.
The Eagles have a 3-0 record heading into Round 4 this weekend and prepare to face the Sturt Sabres to hold onto the top spot.
“They are flying at the moment with another win over the Mavs,” Prentice said on The NBL1 Show.
“It’s the unsung hero in the side that is the regular fixture in Greg Mays, he had another 18-point game.”
Mays has been a key figure for Forestville so far. He racked up 22 points in their opening game against the Southern Tigers.
The 26-year-old averages 20.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. In the Eagles’ third straight win on Thursday night, Mays put down 18 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
“The difference with this Eagles side this year is they’ve recruited Brad Rathjen from the North Adelaide Rockets. They’ve got Malith Machar [former Melbourne United Development player],” Prentice said.
“Those small forward and power forward spots are being filled and Mays has been freed up in the offence.
“A quality rim protector and as a result of that, the Eagles are averaging 105 points per game which has helped them chalk up three wins for the season.”
The Eagles take on the Sabres on Saturday night in Round 4 at home at 8:00 pm ACST. Watch the game live on the NBL1.com.au and NBL1 App here.
