Rockingham Flames (116) defeated Goldfields Giants (45)
It's a new-look Rockingham Flames team in 2024 and they couldn’t have been more emphatic in their start to the season continuing on Sunday beating the Goldfields Giants 116-45.
It's a totally turned over playing squad at the Flames for 2024 under coach Marcus Wong and after first up wins against the South West Slammers by 59 points and Mandurah Magic by 44, they were back home at Mike Barnett Sports Complex on Sunday.
Rockingham played host to a Goldfields team who had lost the previous night also on the road to the Lakeside Lightning by 58 points to open their season.
Sami Whitcomb wasn’t out there for the Flames, but they weren’t lacking in talent nor experience and scored the last 14 points of the opening period to open up a 28-14 lead.
Another 35 points to eight in the second quarter and Rockingham were leading 63-22 at the main break, and then 53 points to 23 in the second half saw the home team secure the 71-point victory.
It continued quite the emphatic start to the season for Rockingham with Nes'eya Parker-Williams a standout with 27 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, five blocks and three steals on 12/17 shooting from the field.
Georgia Pineau added 21 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists with Emma Gandini contributing 13 points, four boards, four steals and two assists, Jess Jakens 11 points and five rebounds, and Sophie Doran 10 points and seven steals.
It was a tough initiation to the new season for the Giants on the road to both the Lightning and Flames this weekend.
Gabriel Clancy top-scored on Sunday with 13 points and nine rebounds with Anne Zipser adding eight points and six boards, and Tamsyn Pentland scoring six points on two three-pointers.
The Flames now take on the Perry Lakes Hawks at Bendat Basketball Centre on Friday night via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App while the Giants will head home to host the Joondalup Wolves on Saturday.

Rockingham Flames (87) defeated Goldfields Giants (78)
The Rockingham Flames did make it three from three to start the NBL1 West season but they were pushed all the way by the Goldfields Giants on Sunday.
The Flames started the 2024 season looking to make up for missing last year's Grand Final despite finishing top of the standings and then losing the Grand Final of the National Finals, and they scored first up wins against the South West Slammers and Mandurah Magic.
That included an overtime win in dramatic fashion against Mandurah on Friday to open Round 2 as they prepared to host the Giants at Mike Barnett Sports Complex on Sunday.
Goldfields entered the 2024 season on Saturday night with a stirring road win against the Lakeside Lightning setting up the Sunday match up.
It was a tight affair and an entertaining contest all the way with Goldfields leading by a point at the end of the first quarter before also extending that advantage to 44-37 by the half-time interval.
Rockingham turned the tide with 28 points to 18 in the fourth quarter, and while the Flames were able to turn that into the nine-point victory, it wasn’t without some nervous moments and the Giants showed plenty to suggest they will be a threat this season under Matthew Van Pelt.
The Flames improved to 3-0 with the victory with Gorjok Gak showing he's more than just a defensive menace with the South East Melbourne Phoenix big man putting up 20 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Two-time MVP Devondrick Walker delivered another 18 points and two boards as well with captain Ryan Godfrey producing 18 points and five assists.
Justin Beard also had 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Travis Durnin six points, nine boards and two assists.
Randy Bell continued his supremely impressive start to his time in the NBL1 West with the Giants with another 31 points and nine rebounds on 14/18 shooting from the floor.
De'Sean Parsons had a triple-double against Lakeside and threatened that again with 12 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals with Mayo Malek adding 10 points, four boards and three assists.
The Flames now take on the Perry Lakes Hawks at Bendat Basketball Centre on Friday night via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App while the Giants will head home to host the Joondalup Wolves on Saturday.
