Bobongie Can Use CQ Cup To Launch NBL1 North Career

Mackay Meteorettes star Denesha Bobongie can elevate her chances of becoming a difference maker next NBL1 North season by having a strong CQ Cup campaign, according to coach Scott McKenzie.

Mackay Meteorettes star Denesha Bobongie can elevate her chances of becoming a difference maker next NBL1 North season by having a strong CQ Cup campaign, according to coach Scott McKenzie.

Bobongie has had a strong start to the CQ Cup, doubling-up with 29 points and 15 rebounds last weekend and adding a further 30 points and 11 rebounds this weekend.

With a slew of youngsters and players on the brink of NBL1 playing in the CQ Cup, McKenzie has challenged Bobongie to use the competition as an audition for the NBL1 North squad.

"She's obviously a talented individual that's done her time on the bench," McKenzie said via The Daily Mercury.

"For her to go to that next level and play major minutes at NBL1 (level), she needs to dominate a comp like this."

McKenzie added he anticipates Bobongie to post high volume statistics every week.

"I would probably nearly expect that every week," McKenzie said.

"She had 30 and 15 last week but realistically she probably could have had 40 and 20 - so that's probably the intensity we have to get from her."

Naomi Cage also had a strong game for Mackay in their big win over the Bundaberg Bears, scoring 16 points.

The Rockhampton Cyclones also defeated the Bears this weekend, with Tori Rouse the standout performer with 21 points.

Mackay and Rockhampton also recorded big wins in the men’s competition. The Meteors were led by Mitchell Gamblin’s 23 points while Hayden Richardson (24 points) and Jared Blanchard (22) were the Rockets’ best.
