After a historic run in 2023, Megan McKay will return to the Bendigo Braves for 2024.
McKay’s trophy cabinet became full after this past NBL1 season, winning the NBL1 South MVP, Championship and then the NBL1 National Championship and Championship Game MVP – leading the team to a perfect 28-0 record across the entire season.
McKay averaged 24 points, 12.4 rebounds and shot 69.30 percent from the field during their undefeated NBL1 South season/
In the National Finals, in front of family and friends, she took her game to a new level – scoring 50 points across two games against the Northside Wizards and the Cockburn Cougars. With her best game coming against the Norths Bears, dropping 46 points with 15 rebounds to clinch the National Title.
Head Coach Mark Alabakov says he cannot wait to bring back McKay for another run at a title.
"Meg is one of the best post players I’ve ever had the privilege of working with,” he said.
“She’s a world class presence at the basket with her sealing, footwork and ability to finish through contact and her work rate for a post player is second to none in Australian Basketball.
"Meg is another best kept secret in Australian Basketball, in my opinion, and I’m glad she got to showcase her talents against the weekly tough games we had in NBL1 to become the league’s MVP, and then to back that up on the National stage to win NBL1 National MVP with a match-winning performance in the final.
"It was so rewarding for me to see her back to her best, smiling and having fun in a supportive team environment. I’m stoked to my core and have so much pride seeing her perform at a level that makes people stand up and pay attention.
"Meg is as genuinely wholesome a human being as you’ll meet. She’s incredibly generous with her time and has spent many hours coaching, mentoring and contributing to the Basketball scene in Bendigo. It’s what makes her a role model for so many girls and boys in our region."
