NBL1 North Recap | Friday Women's Round 4

With superstars Lauren Mansfield, Steph Reid and Abby Cubillo on fire, they helped lead their teams the Gold Coast Rollers, Brisbane Capitals and Townsville Flames to impressive Friday night wins in the NBL1 North Women's competition.

The Friday night Round 4 action in the NBL1 North Women's competition saw the Gold Coast Rollers overcome the Ipswich Force 72-60.

Lauren Mansfield stepped up to deliver 29 points on 7/13 shooting from three-point land for Gold Coast with Tia Hay putting up 27 points with four triples for Ipswich.

It was then a fascinating contest at Townsville StarFM Stadium with the home team Townsville Flames prevailing in the finish 88-77 against the Darwin Salties.

Steph Reid finished with 29 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Flames with Chelsea Brook producing 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Salties.

It was a big win for the Brisbane Capitals on the road also on Friday night, with them prevailing 103-67 against the Mackay Meteorettes.

Abby Cubillo was brilliant for the Capitals with 36 points while Miela Goodchild scored 21 points for Mackay.

Round 4 in the NBL1 North competition now continues on Saturday evening starting with the Northside Wizards playing host to the North Gold Coast Seahawks at 5pm.

Then at 5.30pm, the Red City Roar takes on the Southern Districts Spartans, the Rockhampton Cyclones play the Brisbane Capitals and the South West Metro Pirates are at home to the Gold Coast Rollers.

And finally on Saturday at 6pm, the Cairns Dolphins will host the Darwin Salties and the Logan Thunder take on USC Rip City.

The Round 4 action then continues at 3pm on Sunday afternoon with the Southern Districts Spartans hosting the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.

GOLD COAST ROLLERS 72 defeated IPSWICH FORCE 60

The Gold Coast Rollers continued their undefeated start to the 2022 NBL1 North season with a 12-point home win over the Ipswich Force on Friday night.

The Rollers had played just the two games so far this season and the Force the five, and it was Ipswich who got off to the better start at Carrara Stadium with 23 points to 20 in the opening quarter.

However, Gold Coast began to take over with 24 points to 12 in the second quarter to head into half-time leading 44-35.

That proved to remain around the margin for much of the second half with the Rollers going on to win 72-60 and improve to 3-0 on the season while the Force slip to 1-6.

Sydney Uni Flames WNBL star Lauren Mansfield had a terrific performance for Gold Coast made up of 29 points, six assists, five rebounds and two assists while she knocked down 7/13 from the land of plenty.

Sarah Ambrose added 14 points and four assists for Gold Coast with Angela Lou Beadle contributing 10 points and eight boards.

Tia Hay did all she could to try and keep Ipswich in the contest putting up 27 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the evening on shooting 4/12 from beyond the arc.

Georgia Ralph added 19 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Force while Kasey Burton had four points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

 

TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 88 defeated DARWIN SALTIES 77

The Townsville Flames had to battle hard at home on Friday night to overcome the travelling Darwin Salties before ending up prevailing with the 11-point victory.

The Flames were hosting the Salties on Friday night at Townsville StarFM Stadium and it was the visiting Darwin team who started well to lead 19-17 by the end of the opening quarter.

However, the Flames were able to work their way on top in the second quarter with 26 points to 14. That saw the home team lead 43-33 by half-time and that ended up being the difference in the contest.

Townsville could never fully shake off Darwin but the Flames did end up winning 88-77 to remain unbeaten this NBL1 North season at 4-0 while the Salties are 1-3 in their inaugural season.

Tonwsville Fire WNBL star Steph Reid produced another standout performance for the Flames with 29 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals on the back of shooting 12/21 from the floor.

Mia Murray showed she's still got plenty in the tank with another 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals for Townsville while hitting 4/11 from three-point range.

Courtney Woods added 15 points and six rebounds for the Flames, Grace Rodgers 12 points and eight boards, Harriet Carey six points and four assists, and Shaylee Brownie six points and five rebounds.

The Salties battled valiantly away from home with Chelsea Brook putting up 21 points and 12 rebounds with Erin Bollmann contributing 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and Ruby Porter 17 points, eight assists and four boards.

 

MACKAY METEORETTES 67 lost to BRISBANE CAPITALS 103

With Abby Cubillo on fire, the Brisbane Capitals delivered their most emphatic performance of the NBL1 North season to win on the road over the Mackay Meteorettes on Friday night.

The Capitals came into the game at 1-1 having played just the two matches over the opening three rounds, but they sent a message of what they could be capable of at Mackay Basketball Stadium.

Brisbane started well with 22 points to 15 in the first quarter before really showing their firepower in the second period with 32 points to head into the half-time break leading 54-30.

The Capitals then cruised to the victory in the second half with another 49 points to 37 to end up winning 103-67 to improve to 2-1 on the season while the Meteorettes suffered their first defeat of 2022 after three consecutive victories.

Abby Cubillo was brilliant for the Capitals in the win with the UC Capitals WNBL star putting up 36 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals on the back of shooting 13/18 from the field, 3/4 from beyond the arc and 7/8 at the foul line.

Courtney Middap also had 18 points and five rebounds for Brisbane with Bronte Corke contributing 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Madison Woodford 13 points.

Miela Goodchild battled hard for Mackay to finish the evening with 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists with Shaneice Swain contributing 12 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Alexa Hart 12 points, five boards, three steals and three blocked shots.
