NBL1 NORTH – 2022 WOMEN'S SEASON
ROUND 5 – FRIDAY NIGHT
TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 87 defeated ROCKHAMPTON CYCLONES 65
The Townsville Flames produced a dominant second half to end up beating the Rockhampton Cyclones at home on Friday night by 22 points.
The Flames and Cyclones did battle at Townsville StarFM Stadium on Friday night in the opening to Round 5 of the NBL1 North Women's season.
Townsville came into the clash without Steph Reid who was on Australian Opals duties at the same time but the home team was able to start well to lead 24-18 by the end of the first quarter.
Rockhampton was warming to the task, though, and after falling 12 points down in the second quarter, they were able to score 11 consecutive points of their own to make it just a five-point ball game at the half.
However, the Flames dominated the second half including 21 points to 11 in the third quarter, and another 21 to 14 in the fourth to end up winning 87-65.
The result improves Townsville to a perfect 5-0 record to start the season while Rockhampton are now 1-4.
Three-point shooting was the major difference between the two teams with Townsville hitting 13/32 at 40.6 per cent while Rockhampton went 4/16 at 25 per cent.
Courtney Woods stepped up to deliver 26 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals in the win for the Flames while Mia Murray added 20 points and six boards while connecting on 6/10 from three-point range.
Jaimee Seebohm contributed 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, Harriet Carey 13 points and five boards, and Grace Rodgers eight points and six rebounds.
Jannon Otto ended up with 18 points and six rebounds for the Cyclones with Madison Torresin adding 10 points, Lara McSpadden nine points and five assists, and Annaliese Watkinson eight points.
GOLD COAST ROLLERS 77 lost to MACKAY METEORETTES 91
The Mackay Meteorettes started on fire on the road to the Gold Coast Rollers on Friday night to start their triple-header Round 6 on a winning note.
It's quite the hectic schedule for the Meteorettes in Round 6 of the NBL1 North season with games to come on Saturday playing North Gold Coast and then Sunday against the Logan Thunder, but they started strongly on Friday night.
Mackay was able to put up 30 points to 17 in the first quarter at Carrara Stadium with Alisia Jenkins on fire early before she went off having hurt her leg with an awkward landing.
However, she was able to return and the Meteorettes were able to continue their merry way to head into half-time leading 50-34.
The lead for Mackay grew to 24 points to start the second half on the back of five quick points from Miela Goodchild.
The Rollers had too much firepower and talent to not make a run, though and after falling behind 65-42 following a three ball from Mackay for Monique Bobongie, the home team went on a stunning run to make a game of it.
They scored the next 16 points starting and ending with a Lauren Mansfield three ball. That had the Rollers back within just seven points, but that would be as close as they got.
Mackay were able to steady just before three quarter-time and then hold out in the fourth quarter to record the 91-77 to start their triple-header on the best possible note and hand Gold Coast their first loss of the 2022 season in the process.
There were plenty of standout performers in the win for the Meteorettes with Miela Goodchild top-scoring with 22 points and five rebounds while hitting 4/12 from three-point territory.
Alisia Jenkins shook off her early injury scare for 20 points and seven rebounds with Alexa Hart adding 15 points and six boards, Ellie Collins 13 points and five rebounds, and Shaneice Swain 10 points, 12 assists, five rebounds and five steals.
Lilly Rotunno top-scored for Gold Coast with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists on 7/11 shooting with Lauren Mansfield contributing 15 points and six assists, Angela Lou Beadle 13 points and six rebounds, and Jade Peacock 12 points and five boards.
