NBL1 North Recap | Saturday Men's Round 11

Max Mackinnon continued his growth with a 35-point outburst in Saturday night's NBL1 North Round 11 action while Lual Diing had 26 points and 14 rebounds, Kouat Noi 28 points and 13 boards, Kai Woodfall 32 points and Jordan Hunter 23 points and 22 rebounds.

The Saturday night First Nations Round winners in the NBL1 North were the Brisbane Capitals, Gold Coast Rollers, USC Rip City, Rockhampton Rockets, Cairns Marlins and the Ipswich Force.

The First Nations Round action in the NBL1 North began on Friday night with the Southern Districts Spartans beating the Mackay Meteors 86-85 while Red City Roar beat the South West Metro Pirates 102-78, USC Rip City defeated the Brisbane Capitals 85-76, and the North Gold Coast Seahawks downed the Townsville Heat 103-97.

Then on Saturday night, the Brisbane Capitals bounced back from that Friday night defeat to return home and beat the Sunshine Coast Phoenix 100-87.

Max Mackinnon continued his upward trajectory with 35 points and five assists with Lachlan Dent hitting six threes for 27 points in the win for Brisbane. Jamaal Robateau top-scored for the Phoenix with 20 points.

The Gold Coast Rollers kept their impressive form going on their home court on Saturday night beating the Northside Wizards 93-86.

Jason Cadee finished with 22 points for Gold Coast, Tanner Krebs 18 and Donovan Mitchell 17. Lual Diing put up 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards.

USC Rip City made it a double-win weekend by beating the Red City Roar on their home court 102-82.

Kouat Noi delivered 28 points and 13 rebounds for Rip City and Isaih Tueta 23 points and 10 assists with Jayden Hodgson finishing with 27 points for Red City.

The Rockhampton Rockets caught fire at home to the Southern Districts Spartans to win big 118-97 on Saturday night on the back of a 70-point first half.

Kai Woodfall finished with 32 points and six assists for Rockhampton with six three-pointers. Ngor Nai top-scored for Southern Districts with 24 points and eight rebounds.

The Cairns Marlins proved too strong at home for the North Gold Coast Seahawks coming away with the 90-79 victory.

Ben Ayre put up 23 points for the Marlins, Mirko Djeric 22 and Deba George 20. Aiden Krause top-scored for the Seahawks with 26 points while Jordan Hunter had 23 points and 22 rebounds.

The Ipswich Force came from behind to overrun the Darwin Salties in the Top End to finish up winning 95-90.

Henry Pwono finished with 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Ipswich while Makuach Maluach delivered 31 points in the loss for Darwin. 

First Nations Round in the NBL1 North will now wrap up on Sunday with the Logan Thunder hosting the Gold Coast Rollers from 3pm at Bendigo Bank Cornubia Park Sports Centre.

BRISBANE CAPITALS 100 defeated SUNSHINE COAST PHOENIX 87

The Brisbane Capitals opened up a double-figure lead early and maintained that for an eventual 13-point home win on Saturday night against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.

The Capitals were at home to the Phoenix at Auchenflower Stadium in Round 11 of the NBL1 North and they started strongly with an early 10-0 run to see them lead by 13 points during the opening term, and 28-17 by quarter-time.

Brisbane basically maintained that advantage the rest of the way to lead by 13 points at half-time, still by nine at three quarter-time and then to end up winning 100-87. 

The victory improves the Capitals to an 8-7 record on the season following the end of Round 11 while the Phoenix slip to 7-7 as a result of the defeat.

It was a phenomenal shooting performance from the Capitals going at 59.7 per cent from the field as a team and knocking down 13/24 at 54.2 per cent from three-point range. Sunshine Coast shot 46.1 per cent overall but hit just 5/26 from beyond the arc.

Max Mackinnon produced a brilliant display for Brisbane with 35 points and five assists while shooting 15/20 from the field and 2/2 from beyond the arc.

Lachlan Dent added 27 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals for Brisbane, Anthony Kopcikas 15 points and three assists, and Geordan Papacostas nine points and eight rebounds.

Jamaal Robateau top-scored for Sunshine Coast with 20 points, three rebounds and three assists while Nelson Kahler finished with 17 points and 10 boards, Jonathan Janssen 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, Mason Bragg 15 points and seven assists, and Oscar Cluff 12 points.

 

GOLD COAST ROLLERS 93 defeated NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 86

The Gold Coast Rollers scored a come from behind win over the Northside Wizards on their home floor on Saturday night to storm home and win by seven points.

The Rollers played host to the Wizards at Carrara Stadium and it was the visitors who started impressively to open up an early 10-point lead even though the Rollers were back within a point by quarter-time.

Things remained tight throughout the second quarter and it was Gold Coast leading narrowly 46-44 by half-time.

It was the Wizards who made the break in the third term going on a 9-0 streak to outscore the Rollers 27 points to 18 and that saw them on top 71-64 by three quarter-time.

The Rollers had to find a spark in the fourth quarter and they did exactly that lighting up for a 12-0 run to end up coming from behind to secure the 93-86 victory.

The victory improves Gold Coast to an 11-2 record on top of the standings in the NBL1 North ahead of their clash on Sunday with the Logan Thunder while the Wizards are now 7-5 at the end of Round 11.

Despite Gold Coast winning the game, Northside shot 49.3 per cent from the field compared to 38.8, but the Rollers collected 19 offensive rebounds and forced the Wizards into 18 turnovers to see them end up taking 12 extra field goals and nine more free-throws.

Jason Cadee delivered 22 points, 12 assists and five rebounds for Gold Coast, Tanner Krebs 18 points and eight boards, Donovan Mitchell 17 points and six rebounds, Devon Sullivan nine points and four rebounds, and Preston Le Gassick eight points.

New Brisbane Bullets development player Lual Diing delivered 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards with Cameron Thew adding 20 points and nine boards, Kevin White 11 points and 12 assists, Javaan Mumtaz 14 points and seven assists, and CJ Massingale 11 points and five rebounds.

 

USC RIP CITY 102 defeated RED CITY ROAR 82

USC Rip City produced a powerful performance to score a 20-point victory at home on Saturday night against Red City Roar.

Rip City were at home on Saturday night as First Nations Round in the NBL1 North continued at USC Sports Stadium as they hosted Red City, and they made a roaring start.

USC opened up a 17-point advantage during the opening term and were still on top 31-19 by quarter-time which set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Rip City also outscored the Roar 25 points to 18 in the second term to remain in control leading 56-37 at the half-time interval.

The home team maintained that advantage throughout the second half to lead by as much as 26 points and to go on to score the commanding 102-82 victory.

Following 11 rounds of the 2022 NBL1 North season, USC now sits in fourth position with an 8-4 record while Red City are struggling in 14th place at 4-9 following the defeat.

Rip City had 18 offensive rebounds to eight for the night while also forcing Red City into 20 turnovers which helped them to take 24 more field goals than their opponents even if the Roar got to the foul line 14 more times.

New Sydney Kings signing Kouat Noi was outstanding for Rip City in the win with 28 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two steals while Isaih Tueta delivered 23 points and 10 assists.

Eric McAlister added 13 points and four rebounds, Verle Williams 16 points, six assists and five steals, and Ronnie Twidale eight points and three rebounds.

Jayden Hodgson put up 27 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Red City with Kane Bishiop adding 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, Spencer Parker 13 points and four boards, and Alec Godinet 12 points and four rebounds.

 

ROCKHAMPTON ROCKETS 118 defeated SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS 97

The Rockhampton Rockets were back home on Saturday night and produced a strong showing to beat the Southern Districts Spartans by 21 points.

Rockhampton hosted Southern Districts at Bravus Arena with the Rockets delivering a dominant opening quarter which set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Rockhampton put up 38 points to 21 in the first term to already lead by 17 points at quarter-time. They kept the run going in the second term to end up leading by as much as 30 points and to still be in control 70-47 at half-time.

From there the result was never in doubt and the Rockets went on to win the game 118-97 on their home floor.

The victory improves Rockhampton to a 6-8 record on the season by the end of Round 11 while Southern Districts remains anchored to bottom spot at 1-13.

It was a terrific all-round performance from the Rockets as they shot 52.2 per cent from the floor while knocking down 14/38 from three and got to the foul line a massive 36 times where they converted 32.

Kai Woodfall had a tremendous night for Rockhampton in the win with 32 points and six assists while hitting 6/8 from three-point territory with Matthew McCarthy adding 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Jarvis Summers added 16 points, 16 assists and seven rebounds, Kendall Stephens 16 points and four boards, Damian Prgomet 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Todd Blanchfield 13 points and six boards.

Ngor Nai ended up with 24 points and eight rebounds for Southern Districts while Jalen Canty added 17 points and nine boards, Kobe McDowell-White 13 points and nine assists, and Will Mahoney 12 points and three assists.

 

CAIRNS MARLINS 90 defeated NORTH GOLD COAST SEAHAWKS 79

The Cairns Marlins started strongly at home to the North Gold Coast Seahawks on Saturday night and that set the tone for their eventual 11-point victory.

The Marlins were at home to the Seahawks at Early Settler Stadium and Cairns were impressive early on going on a 9-0 run to open up an 11-point lead by the end of the first quarter.

They stretched that lead out to 14 points during the second term and were still on top 47-41 by half-time.

The Marlins quickly pushed back out to a double-figure advantage in the third quarter and maintained that the rest of the way to lead by 16 points in the third term and to end up winning 90-79. 

Despite the loss, the Seahawks outrebounding the Marlins 51 to 33 but they had 20 turnovers to six and in the end the home team still took 10 extra field goals and were hot from three-point land going 19/48 in the 11-point win.

Ben Ayre was terrific for the Marlins with 23 points and four assists while draining 5/8 from downtown with Mirko Djeric adding 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals on shooting 5/12 from downtown.

Deba George added 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals with Lat Mayen contributing 16 points, eight boards and five assists, and James Mitchell nine points, six boards, four steals and three assists.

Aiden Krause finished with 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for North Gold Coast with Jordan Hunter adding 23 points, 22 boards, three assists and two blocks.

Alex Mudronja also had 13 points and four assists for the Seahawks, and Lloyd McVeigh nine points and five rebounds.

 

DARWIN SALTIES 90 lost to IPSWICH FORCE 95

The Ipswich Force hit the road on Saturday night and finished on fire to nab the win in the Top End against the Darwin Salties.

Darwin was back home to host Ipswich at Darwin Basketball Stadium and the Salties got off to a flying start to lead by as much as 12 points in the first quarter and still 31-23 by quarter-time.

Ipswich was able to work back into the contest during the second quarter but still it was Darwin leading 52-46 by half-time.

The Force were building moment, though, and they outscored the Salties 26 points to 21 in the third term, and then 23 to 17 in the fourth to overrun the home team and end up winning 95-90.

The road win improves Ipswich to a 7-7 record on the season while Darwin slips to 9-4 following the defeat.

Henry Pwono continued his strong form for Ipswich by delivering 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Cairns Taipans star Majok Deng added 20 points and 10 rebounds, Isaac White 19 points and four boards, Jason Ralph 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Cameron Goldfinch 10 points.

Melbourne United signing Makuach Maluach put up 31 points for Darwin while hitting 5/8 from downtown with Tad Dufelmeier contributing 19 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds, Deng Riak 19 points and eight boards, and Jerron Jamerson 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
