NBL1 NORTH RECAP | FRIDAY ROUND 11
WOMEN
Caps finish with 17-2 run to beat Roar
The Red City Roar threw everything at getting that elusive first win of the season but Mia Loyd would have none of it against her former team as the Brisbane Capitals dominated late to win 71-58.
The Caps came into the Saturday night clash at Auchenflower Stadium on the back of big wins over the South West Metro Pirates and Sunshine Coast Phoenix last week with a big job ahead of the Roar as they chased that first win of the season.
Despite Brisbane opening up an eight-point lead by quarter-time and then stretching that advantage out to 15 during the second stanza, Red City wouldn’t go away and had closed the deficit to five by half-time.
The Roar kept on coming in the third quarter and then grabbed the lead two minutes into the final period when Donica Cosby knocked down a three-pointer.
However, from that point it was a remarkable dominance from Brisbane and it was Mia Loyd who led the way in her first game against the team she played with last season.
After Red City led 56-54, the Capitals finished the final eight minutes of the game outscoring the Roar 17 points to two to go from two points down to winning by 14 in the finish.
Loyd produced a tremendous performance against her former team with 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Capitals including going 10/14 at the foul line.

Pirates go second over Salties thanks to Rocci, Young
Second position in the NBL1 North went on the line at Hibiscus Sports Stadium on Saturday night and it was the South West Metro Pirates who prevailed 83-75 against the Darwin Salties.
Coming into the Saturday night match, the Salties remained in second spot at 10-2 after starting their triple-header road trip this weekend beating the Gold Coast Rollers on Friday to be just ahead of the third placed Pirates.
However, the winner of the clash would end the evening in second place so the stage was set for a terrific contest and it didn’t disappoint with the biggest margin between the two sides being the final eight-point margin.
South West Metro did manage to lead for the majority of the contest including by seven points in the first quarter and six in the second, but by half-time scores were all tied at 41-apiece.
The Salties then did manage to lead by a point at three quarter-time, but the Pirates ended up getting the better of things down the stretch to pull away for the eight-point win to grab that second position.

Rip City played host to the unbeaten Wizards at USC Sports Stadium with the home team attempting to snap a seven-game losing streak, and they went ever so close to doing so.
It was a tight game the entire evening despite the differing form of the teams coming into the contest.
Rip City started strongly to lead by as much as six points in the opening period with that lead out to eight in the second stanza with the home team still clinging to a 28-27 advantage by half-time.
The deadlock was only broken going into the three quarter-time break when Courtney Woods threw up a prayer from almost three-quarter court that went down to give Northside the 43-40 lead.
After Georgia Dale put the Wizards five points up to start the fourth, Rip City would score the next seven points with all of them courtesy of N'dea Flye to see the home team regain the lead.
The lead continued to switch hands the rest of the final quarter including Rip City going back on top courtesy of a Steph Bairstow three-pointer with just under a minute to play.
From that point, Rebecca Haynes put Northside back in front before free-throws from AJ Johnson, and one from Haynes sealed the deal for the Wizards who won to stay unbeaten to prevail by four points.

Darwin was on fire in the opening quarter with 28 points to 16 but following that, South West Metro ended up working on top including 31 points to 22 in the second period.
The Pirates continued with the momentum to grab the lead in the third quarter and then went on with the job in the fourth to secure the six-point win in a bounce back performance from last week's 48-point loss to the Brisbane Capitals.
Having Lamar Patterson and Roman Siulepa back for the Pirates was a significant boost but losing Ben Volkman just before quarter-time when he was ejected wasn't quite what they were after.
Despite that, Kai Woodfall finished with 23 points and three rebounds for South West Metro with Brendan Teys contributing 21 points, five boards, five assists and two steals, and Lamar Patterson 17 points and six rebounds.

Noi's free-throws secure Rip City win over Wizards
He thrives for the big moment and reigning NBL1 North MVP Kouat Noi hit the game clinching free-throws in Saturday night's 86-85 win for the USC Rip City against the Northside Wizards.
The six-point lead that the Wizards opened up in the first quarter would prove the biggest margin between the two teams the entire game on Saturday night in what turned into a tremendous contest.
The Wizards were still leading by four points at quarter-time but that lead was down to just one at the half-time break.
Northside were still leading by two at three quarter-time and then again the Wizards were up four with 2:30 to play thanks to a Josh Hughes bucket.
It was up to Rip City to respond and Josh Tueta knocked down a three to make it a one-point ball game and ultimately the last score of the game was the two free throws from reigning MVP Kouat Noi.
That put USC up by a point and the late prayer for the Wizards from Cameron Healy wouldn’t fall and Rip City held on for the crucial one-point win to improve to 5-6 on the season with the Wizards now 6-5.
Brandon Wood put up 20 points and five assists in the win for Rip City with Noi contributing 19 points and nine boards with 13/14 at the free-throw line.
Matt Kenyon added 16 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two steals, Verle Williams 12 points, five boards and five assists, and Josh Tueta nine points on 4/4 shooting.

Deng, Sobey lift Ipswich over White's Meteors in OT
The battle of Brisbane Bullets teammates Isaac White and Nathan Sobey was worth the price of admission alone, but that was just where things started in a remarkable overtime battle between the Mackay Meteors and Ipswich Force.
Ipswich started the game on the road on fire on the back of Friday night's 15-point win against the Rockhampton Rockets with the Force racing to a 15-point lead on the back of a 38-point opening period.
Nathan Sobey was brilliant in Ipswich’s overtime W

The Ipswich lead grew to 21 points in the second quarter and they were still leading 67-48 on the back of a phenomenal offensive performance in that first half.
However, Mackay worked back into the contest with 27 points to 19 in the third stanza and the Meteors kept the momentum going in the fourth term and even managed to lead by as much as seven points on the back of an 11-0 run.
It was a Brad Rasmussen triple that put the Meteors up seven with six minutes to play and they were still up four with 3:45 to play after a bucket to Isaac White.
However, Ipswich wasn’t going away and ultimately a turnaround jumper from Deng Deng, and then free-throws from Nathan Sobey for the Force was enough to force the game into overtime.
Mackay made the first break in extra time and led by five after a triple from Isaiah Lee, but Sobey answered in kind for Ipswich before a Kyrin Galloway dunk and the extra put the visitors back in front.
Deng then pushed the lead out to three and then when the Force broke the defensive trap and Galloway delivered another dunk, Ipswich had done enough for the five-point win to improve to 10-3 on the season. Mackay is now 7-6 and a top four spot is slipping away.
Nathan Sobey finished with 26 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks for Ipswich on 9/14 shooting with 6/8 from the foul line.
Kyrin Galloway added 21 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, Jaylin Galloway 10 points and five boards, and Cameron Goldfinch 16 points and four assists.
But it was Deng Deng who was a difference maker for the Force with 29 points, five rebounds and three assists on 13/22 shooting from the floor.
Isaac White continued his scintillating form this season for Mackay with another 33 points, 15 assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Isaiah Lee finished with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Meteors while Christian Maran added 15 points, six boards and four assists, and Tyler Williams 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
