NBL1 North Recap | Saturday Women's Round 11

There were Saturday night NBL1 North Women's victories for the Brisbane Capitals, Northside Wizards, USC Rip City, Southern Districts Spartans, Cairns Dolphins and Ipswich Force.
The First Nations Round action in the NBL1 North began on Friday night with the Southern Districts Spartans beating the Mackay Meteorettes 88-58 while the Red City Roar beat the South West Metro Pirates 58-53, USC Rip City downed the Brisbane Capitals 81-65 and the Townsville Flames prevailed 97-63 against the North Gold Coast Seahawks.
Then on Saturday night, the Brisbane Capitals bounced back from their loss on Friday night to beat the Sunshine Coast Phoenix 106-62 on their home floor.
Bronte Corke finished with 22 points and eight rebounds in the win for Brisbane while Tyla Stolberg added 17 points. Amy Browne top-scored for Sunshine Coast with 12 points.
The Northside Wizards then played their only game of First Nations Round and scored the 103-91 road victory against the Gold Coast Rollers.
Tiana Mangakahia continued her hot recent form for the Wizards putting up 41 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds and six steals to lead the way in the big win while Shyla Heal added 28 points. Nyah Morris scored 24 points for Gold Coast.
USC Rip City made it a double-win weekend by beating Red City Roar at home on Saturday night 75-68 after their win against the Brisbane Capitals on Friday.
Maddy Rocci had a massive night for Rip City with 41 points and 10 rebounds with Ashley Arlen adding 15 points and 14 rebounds. Mia Lloyd top-scored for Red City with 24 points.
The Southern Districts started on fire to set up an eventual 86-56 victory on the road to the Rockhampton Cyclones on Saturday night.
Nadeen Payne had another double-double for the Spartans with 25 points and 10 rebounds with Madison Torresin and Annaliese Watkinson both scoring 11 points for Rockhampton.
The Cairns Dolphins also scored another strong win at home beating the North Gold Coast Seahawks 95-74.
Cayla George was once again outstanding with 21 points, 22 rebounds and 11 assists with Leichan Williams scoring 22 points, Penina Davidson 21 and Teyahna Bond 18.
The Ipswich Force enjoyed their trip to the Top End coming away with an 81-64 victory against the Darwin Salties.
Amanda Cahill finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds for Ipswich with Lauren Heard scoring 13 points to go with five assists for Darwin.
First Nations Round in the NBL1 North will now wrap up on Sunday with the Logan Thunder hosting the Gold Coast Rollers from 1pm at Bendigo Bank Cornubia Park Sports Centre.

BRISBANE CAPITALS 106 defeated SUNSHINE COAST PHOENIX 62
The Brisbane Capitals started strongly and were never headed on their way to a 44-point win at home on Saturday night against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.
The Capitals played host to the Phoenix at Auchenflower Stadium as First Nations Round in NBL1 North continued and the home team didn’t take long to open up a handy gap with a 6-0 run to lead by 11.
They were still up 19-9 by quarter-time and then really pulled away in the second term with another streak of 12 points on the way to 33 points to 12 to take a 52-21 advantage into the half-time break.
It was more of the same in the third quarter with Brisbane scoring 31 points to 17 to see the lead grow to 45 points, but at least the Phoenix finished well to win the fourth quarter 24 points to 23.
The Capitals still won big 106-62 to improve to a 9-6 record on the season while the Phoenix are 1-13 following the defeat.
Brisbane collected 55 rebounds to 37 for the game while the Capitals shot 49.4 per cent from the floor and knocked down 12/27 from three with the Phoenix shooting at 35.8 per cent on the back of knocking down just 4/16 from beyond the arc.
Bronte Corke finished with 22 points and eight rebounds for Brisbane while knocking down 6/12 from three-point land.
Tyla Stolberg also had 17 points and three rebounds for the Capitals, Abby Cubillo 14 points and 13 assists, Courtney Middap 14 points, seven boards and six assists, Madison Woodford 12 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals, and Hilary Fuller 11 points and eight boards.
Amy Browne top-scored for Sunshine Coast with 12 points while Leilani Siamoa added 11 points, Nicola Handreck 10 points, seven steals and four rebounds, and Madeleine White nine points, seven boards and five assists.
GOLD COAST ROLLERS 91 lost to NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 103
The Northside Wizards built up a big lead and held off the late charge from the Gold Coast Rollers for a 12-point win on Saturday night.
The Rollers and Wizards locked horns on Saturday night in First Nations Round at Carrara Stadium and Northside started well to open up a nine-point lead, and to still be up 31-25 by the end of one.
Gold Coast kept things tight in the second quarter by outscoring Northside 26 points to 23 and that saw the Wizards only narrowly leading 54-51 by half-time.
It was then all the Wizards in the third quarter as they scored 13 straight points at one stage to end up leading by as much as 23, and that was the three quarter-time margin.
Gold Coast did throw everything at a fightback in the last term but Northside had done enough to end up winning 103-91.
The result means that the Wizards improve to an 8-4 record while the Rollers are 5-9 by the end of Round 11.
Tiana Mangakahia continued her stunning form for the Wizards as she gears up to play in the upcoming WNBL season at the Sydney Uni Flames.
She put up 41 points as part of a triple-double that included 12 assists, 10 rebounds and six steals on the back of shooting 13/28 from the floor, 3/9 from beyond the arc and 12/13 from the free-throw line.
Shyla Heal added 28 points, five rebounds and four assists for Northside, Alice O'Driscoll 14 points, six boards and four assists, and Caitlin Cunningham 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Nyah Morris finished with 24 points, three rebounds and three assists for Gold Coast with Angela Lou Beadle contributing 17 points, nine boards and three assists, Jade Peacock 14 points and four assists, Sarah Heard 13 points, and Lilly Rotunno 12 points and six assists.
USC RIP CITY 75 defeated RED CITY ROAR 68
USC Rip City built up a match-winning first half lead and then held off the Red City Roar for the eventual seven-point win at home on Saturday night.
Rip City were at home to Red City at USC Sports Stadium and the home team started impressively to lead 26-14 by the end of the first quarter.
USC continued on their merry way in the second term with another 20 points to 12 which saw them go into the half-time interval leading 46-26.
The Rip City lead did grow out to 24 points during the third quarter but from there Red City were able to get on a roll and give a miracle comeback a sniff, but they couldn’t quite get close enough.
USC ended up holding on for the 75-68 victory having earlier led by as much as 24 points to see them improve to a 6-6 record while Red City are now 4-9.
Maddy Rocci produced a standout performance in the win for Rip City ending the evening with 41 points and 10 rebounds on the back of shooting 12/18 from the field, 3/6 from three-point land and 14/15 from the foul line.
Ashley Arlen added 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for USC, Katherine Ups seven points, and Liisa Ups six points, nine boards, seven assists and two steals.
Mia Lloyd did what she could to try and spark the Roar with 24 points and nine rebounds with Ariana Moorer contributing 21 points, seven boards and five assists, Emily Preston 11 points, eight boards, four blocks and three steals, and Lily Sarra nine points.
ROCKHAMPTON CYCLONES 56 lost to SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS 86
The Southern Districts Spartans proved too strong on Saturday night on the road to the Rockhampton Cyclones to end up winning by 30 points.
Rockhampton hosted Southern Districts at Bravus Arena as part of First Nations Round in the NBL1 North and it was the Spartans who didn’t take long to take control scoring 14 straight points to lead 27-13 by quarter-time.
Southern Districts went on another 10-0 run in the second term to see their lead grow to 30 points and they were on top 55-25 by half-time as a result.
It was a relatively even second half but the Spartans' lead did get out to as far as 35 points before they claimed the 86-56 victory.
The result improves Southern Districts to a 12-2 record on the season while Rockhampton is now 6-8 following the defeat.
The Spartans ended up shooting 50.8 per cent from the field while knocking down 7/19 from three-point land and 13/21 at the foul line while the Cyclones went 32.8 per cent from the floor, 5/22 from downtown and 7/9 from the charity stripe.
Nadeen Payne had another standout performance for Southern Districts with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three assists with Madelyn Allen adding 17 points and six assists, and Leah Scott 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Kalani Purcell also had 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals, Lil Dart 10 points and four boards, and Natalie Taylor eight points, four steals and three assists.
Madison Torresin finished with 11 points for Rockhampton, Annaliese Watkinson 11 points and three rebounds, Jannon Otto 10 points and five boards, Lara McSpadden 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Heidi Freeburn eight points, six boards and three assists.
CAIRNS DOLPHINS 95 defeated NORTH GOLD COAST SEAHAWKS 74
The firepower of the Cairns Dolphins was once again on show in their 21-point win at home to the North Gold Coast Seahawks.
The Dolphins hosted the Seahawks at Early Settler Stadium on Saturday night as part of First Nations Round in the NBL1 North with the home team leading 23-17 by quarter-time.
Another 7-0 run during the second quarter for Cairns saw the lead balloon out to 15 points with the home side leading 48-37 by the end of the first half.
The Dolphins extended their lead out further with another 25 points to 18 in the third quarter before they ended up winning 95-74.
The result means the Dolphins improve to an 8-5 record on the season after Round 11 while the Seahawks slide to 8-6 following the defeat away from home.
It was a terrific shooting night from Cairns as they went 53.3 per cent from the floor as a team while North Gold Coast shot at 35.4 per cent.
Cayla George continued her terrific form for the Dolphins with another 21 points, 22 rebounds and 11 assists to make up her triple-double to go with three steals and three blocks.
Leichan Williams also had 22 points and six rebounds for Cairns, Penina Davidson 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, Teyahna Bond 18 points and six assists, and Amy Lewis nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Doniyah Cliney top-scored for North Gold Coast with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists while Erin Riley contributed 19 points and seven boards, Courtney Willemse 10 points and four rebounds, Lauren Jansen 10 points, seven boards and four assists, and Katelyn Donovan nine points and eight rebounds.
DARWIN SALTIES 64 lost to IPSWICH FORCE 81
The Ipswich Force headed to the Top End on Saturday night to end up beating the Darwin Salties by 17 points.
The Salties played host to the Force in First Nations Round in the NBL1 North at Darwin Basketball Stadium and the home team actually started well to score 10 straight points during the opening term.
Ipswich also went on their own 6-0 run to lead by nine before that Darwin fightback and by quarter-time scores were level at 20-20.
It was then all the Force as they scored 16 consecutive points to lead by as much as 15 points and to still be on top 40-31 at the main break.
Ipswich would then end up leading by as much as 18 points as they went on to score the 81-64 victory away from home.
The result meant that the Force improve to a 5-9 record on the season by the end of Round 11 in the NBL1 North while the Salties slide to 3-10.
Ipswich collected 58 rebounds to 41 for the game on the back of shooting 38.2 per cent from the field while taking 27 free-throws with Darwin managing to go 28.0 per cent overall and taking 17 free-throws.
Amanda Cahill delivered a tremendous night for Ipswich with 27 points, 11 rebounds and four assists while hitting 4/5 from beyond the arc.
Brianna Rollerson added 16 points and 21 rebounds for the Force while Georgia Ralph contributed 12 points, Tia Hay 11 points, six assists and five rebounds, Kasey Burton eight points and 13 boards, and Claudia Amato seven points and two assists.
Lauren Heard finished with 13 points and five assists for Darwin, Teyla Evans 10 points and seven rebounds, Jessica Boundy 10 points, and Chelsea Brook nine points and 11 rebounds.
