ROUND 6 – SATURDAY NIGHT

IPSWICH FORCE 61 lost to SOUTHERN DISTRICT SPARTANS 104

The Southern District Spartans continued their impressive form beating the Ipswich Force on the road by 43 points on Saturday night.

The Force were back home at JBS Stadium but it didn’t turn out the evening they were hoping for up against the Spartans.

Southern Districts started on fire with 33 points to 16 in the first quarter and that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The Spartans turned that 17-point lead after one into a 22 points half-time lead before leading by 28 points at three quarter-time and then going on to win the game 104-61.

Southern Districts pulled down 48 rebounds to 31 for the game including 19 offensive boards to 11 while shooting 52.7 per cent from the field to 37.5. They also forced Ipswich into 27 turnovers for the night to end up taking 10 more field goals and 26 extra free throws.

Nadeen Payne was the star of the evening for the Spartans with 25 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, but she was far from alone.

Kalani Purcell added 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, Leah Scott 16 points, seven boards, five assists and four steals, Lil Dart 15 points, four assists, three boards and two assists, and Maddie Allen 11 points, 13 assists, three rebounds and three steals.

NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 81 defeated SUNSHINE COAST PHOENIX 74

The Northside Wizards secured a hard fought seven-point home win against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix on Saturday night.

The Wizards hosted the Phoenix at South Pine Sports Complex on Saturday and it was a high-tempo opening from both teams with Sunshine Coast leading 28-27 by the end of the opening quarter.

It stayed a tight contest with Northside scoring seven straight points during the second quarter to help them to a 46-44 lead. While the Wizards did go up by seven during the third quarter but Sunshine Coast stayed in touch and the margin was just three at three quarter-time.

An Alice O'Driscoll layup with 1:30 remaining helped the Wizards still lead by six and while Eryka Sidney did bring the Phoenix back within three a couple of times in the final minute, Tiana Mangakahia sealed the deal for the Wizards at the charity stripe.

The Wizards went on to win the game 81-74 to improve to a 5-1 record on the season while the Phoenix are now 1-7 following the loss despite the performance having plenty of positives for coach Darren Browne.

The Phoenix had a remarkable dominance on the boards with 54 rebounds to 32 including 23 at the offensive end to nine which helped them take seven more field goals for the game, but they couldn’t quite transfer that into the win with their 22 turnovers a factor in that.

Tiana Mangakahia was the star of the evening for the Wizards finishing with 35 points, seven assists, six steals and three rebounds while going 12/14 at the foul line.

Shyla Heal was back from playing with the Australian Opals against Japan and produced 19 points with Kelsey McDermott adding 15 points and three rebounds, and Alice O'Driscoll nine points, five rebounds and four steals.

MACKAY METEORETTES 79 lost to USC RIP CITY 99

It was a big win for USC Rip City as they made the trip north and came away with a 20-point victory against the Mackay Meteorettes.

Mackay were back home at Mackay Basketball Stadium after last week's three-game road trip in the south of Queensland, but they didn’t get to enjoy the homecoming they were hoping for.

It was a tight opening quarter with Rip City leading 21-20 by quarter-time before the visitors took control of the game in the second term with 24 points to 14 to go into the half-time break leading 45-34.

It was more of the same in the second half from USC with 29 points to 23 in the third quarter, and another 25 points to 22 in the fourth term to see them come away with the impressive 99-79 victory so far away from home.

The win improves Rip City to a 2-5 record on the season after six rounds while the Meteorettes are now 4-4 having now played four matches in the past eight days.

Maddy Rocci was superb once more for Rip City finishing the evening with 29 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals on the back of shooting 11/21 from the field, 3/10 from downtown and 4/4 from the free-throw line.

TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 97 defeated GOLD COAST ROLLERS 53

The Townsville Flames maintained their undefeated start to the NBL1 North Women's season with quite the emphatic 44-point win at home to the Gold Coast Rollers.

The Rollers arrived at Townsville StarFM Stadium on the back of having lost their first two games of the season as they tried to bounce back and hand the Flames their first defeat of 2022.

That task got all that much harder during the first quarter with Townsville putting up 27 points to nine to already lead by 18 points at quarter-time.

The Flames extended their lead further with 26 points to 16 in the second term to see the home team lead 53-25 by the half-time interval.

Townsville blew things open even further with another 23 points to 11 in the third term and then completed the job to end up winning 97-53.

The result keeps the Flames undefeated after six games this NBL1 North season while the Rollers are now 4-3 having lost three in-a-row after winning their first four games of the campaign.

It was tough going for Gold Coast in the absence of Lauren Mansfield and Townsville ended up winning the rebound battle 58 to 35 while shooting 47.9 per cent from the floor opposed to 29.2.

Courtney Woods was outstanding for the Flames with 33 points including knocking down 7/11 from three-point range.

Steph Reid also put up 23 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and four steals, Mia Murray 13 points and six rebounds, Jaimee Seebohm 11 points and 12 boards, and Grace Rodgers eight points and 11 rebounds.

DARWIN SALTIES 76 defeated NORTH GOLD COAST SEAHAWKS 67

The Darwin Salties recorded their third win of their inaugural NBL1 North season beating the North Gold Coast Seahawks at nine points on Saturday night.

The Salties were back home at Darwin Basketball Stadium and another loud and passionate home crowd greeted them to host the Seahawks, and they started well on the back of that with 25 points to 15 in the opening quarter.

Darwin scored another eight straight points to lead by as much as 14 points in the second term but the Seahawks stayed in touch trailing only by 10 at half-time.

Even though the Salties got back out to a 20-point lead in the third quarter, but Seahawks kept on fighting to make things interesting even though Darwin did enough to end up securing the 76-67 victory.

The win improves the Salties to a 3-4 record on the season in their first NBL1 North season while the Seahawks are now 4-3 following their defeat in the Far North.

Chelsea Brook was impressive for the Salties putting up a performance consisting of 22 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and two assists.
