Sunshine Coast Phoenix 92 def Brisbane Capitals 76
Sunshine Coast Phoenix have won their opening game at home this NBL1 North Women season with a 92-76 victory over Brisbane Capitals at Maroochydore Stadium on Friday night.
Phoenix forward Jennifer Carden-David top scored for the home side with an efficient 24 points from 10 of 15 shooting including two three-pointers from three attempts.
Sunshine Coast guard Kathleen MacLeod tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists. Fellow guard Amy Browne scored 19 points from 7 of 10 attempts made including a perfect two from two beyond the arc, while Rachael McCully added 11 points.
The hot hands from the Phoenix, shooting above 50% from the field (32 of 63) including three-pointers (7 of 13), proved to be the game difference.
The Capitals, despite leading in rebounds 47-36, including 18-7 on the offensive end, couldn’t make the most of their extra scoring opportunities. Brisbane made 31 of 75 field goal attempts including 2 of 9 from beyond the arc.
Brisbane forward Meg Essex had a game-high 25 points with 59% accuracy.
The Phoenix led at each quarter to improve to a 2-1 record
