USC Rip City 68 def by Logan Thunder 79

Logan Thunder won the first leg of their Sunshine Coast road trip with a 79-68 win over USC Rip City at USC Sports Stadium on Friday night.

Thunder’s Mikaela duo put up big numbers for the visitors. Centre Mikaela Ruef tallied 13 points and 19 rebounds while guard Mikaela Cann added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Logan attack also had major contributions for team-high scorer Chevannah Paalvast (16 points) with 70% field goals made, Ashley Taia (13 points), and Indiah Bowyer (11 points).

Rip City guard Bree Delaney came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points including 4 of 7 from deep. Delaney scored 11 points, including three three-pointers, in a 20-5 run midway through the second quarter to help the home side take a 35-34 lead.

The undefeated Thunder steadied the ship with a 10-0 run, including six points to Paalvast, to close out the half.

Carlie Smith tallied a double-double for USC with 15 points and 18 rebounds while Layla Prince scored 10 points with 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.

The Thunder return to the court tonight to take on Sunshine Coast Phoenix at Maroochydore Stadium, while Rip City head to Brisbane to take on Red City Roar.

Brisbane Capitals 62 def by Mackay Meteorettes 68

Mackay improved to a 7-1 win-loss record with a 68-62 victory over Brisbane Capitals at Auchenflower Stadium on Friday night.

Down one (51-52) at the 8.10 mark in the final quarter, the Meteorettes used an 8-0 run the build the winning margin.

Mackay guard Chelsea Brook stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and four blocks.

Mackay’s Heidi Freeburn scored a game-high 23 points and Jacqui Zelenka chimed in with 13 points, including four points down the stretch.

Brisbane’s Anna Cameron top scored for the home side with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She was joined by Madison Woodford (15 points, 10 rebounds) with a double double.

The Meteorettes play their second game of a three-leg Brisbane road trip Saturday at the undefeated Southern Districts Spartans, followed by Northside Wizards on Sunday.
