NBL1 WEST – 2022 WOMEN'S SEASON
ROUND 7 – SATURDAY NIGHT

EAST PERTH EAGLES 82 lost to SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS 84

The South West Slammers won their first match in almost three years on Saturday and it's only fitting that it was in dramatic fashion against the East Perth Eagles.

The Slammers arrived at Herb Graham Recreation Centre on Saturday evening having lost their previous 41 matches but by the end of the evening, they had won their first match since beating the Cockburn Cougars at Wally Hagan Stadium back on June 22, 2019.

With Jorjah Smith knocking down three balls, it was East Perth who started strongly on their home floor to open up a 25-13 quarter-time advantage.

The Eagles were still on top 45-33 at half-time but this was a different Slammers team with the leadership of Alex Ciabattoni and Tylinn Carter having come into the group.

South West put up 22 points to 12 in the third quarter to make a game of it, and it was quite the remarkable fourth quarter.

The Eagles reclaimed a six-point advantage early in the fourth term on the back of triples from Smith and Bree Fisher. When Fisher hit her second three of the quarter soon after, East Perth was still in control leading by seven with four minutes on the clock.

Ciabattoni responded with a three-pointer of her own for the Slammers but again Smith had the response to restore East Perth's five-point advantage with two minute remaining.

They were still up five with 1:30 left, however, on this night the Slammers wouldn’t be denied.

After Ciabattoni hit a pair of free-throws, the Eagles forced a turnover and Ciabattoni found Skye Palmer for the three ball to tie scores up.

The Slammers then forced another stop and this time it was Tylinn Carter who found Grace Adams for the go-ahead three-pointer. That would prove enough for the Slammers to win their first game in 35 months, prevailing 84-82.

With South West winning its first game in 42 attempts, remarkably not one single player who hit the floor in that win over Cockburn three years ago played in Saturday night's win over East Perth at Mirrabooka.

The Warwick Senators backed up a 45-point Friday night win over the Perry Lakes Hawks by beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns by the same margin on Saturday.

The Senators are building some impressive momentum now and two wins by a combined 90 points inside 24 hours in Round 7 sure sent a message of their potential in the 2022 NBL1 West season.

Coming off the win against Perry Lakes on Friday, Warwick headed to Ray Owen Sports Centre on Saturday and started strongly against the Eastern Suns with 26 points to 12 in the opening quarter.

Perry Lakes lost at Warwick Stadium to the Warwick Senators by 45 points on Friday night to open Round 7 of the NBL1 West season, but the Hawks bounced back strongly against the Redbacks at Bendat Basketball Centre.

The Redbacks had been hammered last Saturday night by the Cockburn Cougars, but they welcomed back Makailah Dyer, Jess Jakens and Kayonna Lee to at least allow them to be more competitive against Perry Lakes despite still missing some troops and coach Michelle Fletcher.

It was a seesaw battle for a lot of the evening as well with both teams attempting to bounce back from heavy losses.

Perry Lakes led 27-24 by the end of the opening quarter but Perth did well in the second term and went into the half-time break leading 48-47.
