Newcastle has named Peter Astley and Chloe Mullaney as its NBL1 East men's and women's coaches.

Both coaches have a wealth of experience with Newcastle senior and junior representative teams and look forward to steering our senior teams in the exciting new NBL1 East competition, which replaces the Basketball NSW Waratah League 1.

Most recently, Mullaney was in charge of Newcastle’s championship-winning Waratah League Women in 2021 and Astley worked as an assistant to Rex Nottage with Newcastle’s Waratah League Men.

Mullaney told NBN News she was excited to see what Newcastle could do in NBL1 East next year.

"To be back involved with such a great club and great juniors coming through, I'm keen to be involved and be part of their journey in making them better players," she said.

Astley was equally excited, highlighting Newcastle's proud history in basketball.

"We are the home of the NBL and our history here is so proud," he said.

"We've had some really high-quality players and high-quality juniors come through our program and are still in our program.

"Now, we're taking this to the next level, lifting it a bit further and offering a great pathway and opportunity for all of our players to fulfill their dreams."
