NORTH RECAP | ROUND 3 SATURDAY
WOMEN
Northside Wizards (101) lost to Mackay Meteorettes (107)
Northside and Mackay put on a spectacular Sunday afternoon basketball spectacle combining for 208 points in just 40 points with Courtney Woods and Unique Thompson delivering 82 of those, and it was the Meteorettes downing the Wizards 107-101.
Both teams were also in action on Saturday night with the Wizards suffering a loss away to the Southern Districts Spartans ahead of getting back home to Northside Indoor Sports Centre to host the Meteorettes.
Mackay started their road double beating the Sunshine Coast Phoenix by 32 points but with the talent on both sides, each team put on a spectacular show for the full 40 minutes.
It was Mackay leading 25-20 by the end of the first quarter before there were 61 points between the teams in the second frame with the Meteorettes scoring 33 of them on 15/24 shooting despite the 28 on 6/9 three-point shooting from Northside.
That saw Mackay go into the half-time break leading 58-48 before they were able to push that advantage out to as much as 14 points in the fourth quarter.
The Wizards did keep on fighting and went on an 11-0 scoring run in the last quarter, but the Meteorettes did enough to secure the eventual six-point victory in what could very well end up being the highest quality game of the NBL1 North season.
The win improves Mackay to a 4-0 record to start the season and the arrival this weekend of former NBL1 East Grand Final MVP Unique Thompson has made them look quite the ominous outfit.
She finished Sunday's game with 38 points, 15 rebounds, two assists and two blocks on 17/24 shooting.
Monique Bobongie added 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, Cheyenne Bobongie 13 points and three assists, Amari Robinson 13 points and five rebounds, and Hannah Jensen 10 points and two assists.
The Wizards are now 2-2 to start the season but are looking dangerous now that Courtney Woods is settling in having spent the 2024 season with the Darwin Salties.
Woods finished with 44 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and two blocked shots on shooting 15/27 from the field, 4/12 from three-point range and 10/10 at the free-throw line.
Courtney Virgo added 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks, Cierra Walker 14 points, seven boards and four assists, and Alice O'Driscoll 14 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

MEN
Northside Wizards (94) defeated Mackay Meteors (91)
Tyler Williams was the hero late for the Northside Wizards as they won a terrific Sunday afternoon contest beating the Mackay Meteors 94-91 on his 28 points to overcome the 31 from Makuach Maluach.
The Wizards and Meteors came into the Sunday clash at Northside Indoor Sports Centre with both having played on Saturday night with Northside losing a thriller to the Southern Districts Spartans while Mackay lost their first game as defending champs to the Sunshine Coast Phoenix by 27 points.
Scores were all level at 26-26 by the end of the first quarter with the Wizards shooting 10/18 from the floor opposed to the 9/18 from the Meteors.
Northside did open up a nine-point lead in the second term thanks to a 9-0 scoring run but the Meteors fired back and cut the deficit to just three by the half-time break.
It was then just a one-point lead for the Wizards at three quarter-time with the Meteors opening up a five-point lead early in the last period thanks to a 7-0 run.
The lead then continued to switch hands the rest of the way but with scores tied at 91-91 with a minute to play, Tyler Williams hit the biggest shot of the game to put the Wizards up two.
It would be the last basket of the contest too with the only other score of the final minute being a free-throw to Williams and Northside ended up securing the three-point home victory.
Both teams now sit on 2-2 records by the end of Round 3 with not much separating them with the Meteors having 53 rebounds to 37, but they also had 17 turnovers to five which helped the Wizards end up attempting six more field goals.
On top of scoring the game's last three points, Tyler Williams finished with 28 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals for the Wizards with Durrell McDonald adding 26 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Alec Hillman also had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists, Isaiah Jorgensen seven points and two steals, and Nikau McCullough seven points and three assists.
Mackay have now lost two straight matches as defending champions despite having a remarkably different team to the one that dominated the North in 2025.
