Phoenix big man Kahler ready to take up the challenge of new NBL1 North competition

Despite big offers from interstate NBL1 clubs, Sunshine Coast Phoenix player Nelson Kahler has shown his commitment by re-signing with the club for the new look NBL1 North competition in 2021.

Despite big offers from interstate NBL1 clubs, Sunshine Coast Phoenix player Nelson Kahler has shown his commitment by re-signing with the club for the new look NBL1 North competition in 2021.

A product of the Noosa Basketball Association, Kahler has already established an impressive basketball resume with stints in the US college system (Colorado State-Pueblo), an NBA pre-draft workout with the Denver Nuggets and professional contracts in Spain and Germany.

Returning from overseas, Kahler played the 2018 QBL season with the Brisbane Capitals before heading to the Rockhampton Rockets in 2019, finally landing back on the coast with the Phoenix for the COVID-19-interrupted 2020 QSL season.

A breakout year saw Kahler become a regular double-double contributor for the Phoenix, highlighted by a stand-out performance against local rivals USC Rip in which he posted 16 points and an amazing 28 rebounds.

Preparing for the inaugural NBL1 North season, Kahler said he was itching to get started.

"I am extremely excited to sign with the Sunshine Coast Phoenix for the 2021 season," he said.

"Our club made a massive stride forward last year in the QSL after losing in the semi-finals by two points.

"It showed that we have the local talent to compete with the biggest clubs in the league and I can't wait to continue where we left off.

"With the new additions we have added to the team, I think we have the talent and chemistry to bring home the title."

Phoenix Head Coach Dale Ryan has been impressed with Kahler’s work on and off the court during the pre-season.

"Nelson has been the ultimate club man and epitome of what you seek in a role model for developing players in a program like ours," he said.

"His professionalism, no-fuss approach and his willingness to engage in the local Sunshine Coast basketball community have been invaluable to the club.

"I look forward to assisting in the development of Nelson’s already impressive game and hope that this season can serve a purpose towards an opportunity with an NBL team next season."

The Phoenix Women’s and Men’s team will play part in the NBL1 North “Rivalry Round” season launch, when they take on the University of Sunshine Coast Rip on Thursday 13 May at USC Stadium.

The women’s game will tip-off at 6.30pm, with the men’s action starting at 8.30pm.
