Roberts and Stephens to coach Wizards in 2021 NBL1 North season

The Northside Wizards have announced their head coaches for the 2021 NBL1 West season, with Nick Roberts to lead the men’s team and Rebecca Stephens to lead the women’s team.

Roberts has had unparalleled success with the Wizards program. He has coached the Wizards U18 boys to a State Championship in 2012 and more recently, leading the QSL men to the Grand Final in four consecutive years from 2016-2019. 

With three QSL championships and three Basketball Queensland Coach of the Year awards, Roberts is well-placed as head coach of the Wizards men for the inaugural NBL1 North season.

“We are looking forward to bringing an exciting level of Basketball to the Northside Wizards Community,” Northside Wizards President Brett Anderson said.

“Wizards fans can expect a strong playing roster and some exciting games when the season opens in mid-May. Our move into NBL1 offers a great pathway for junior players aspiring to play at higher levels and we are happy to have a coach of Nick’s calibre leading our men’s program.”

Stephens brings with her a wealth of experience and a winning culture, having led the Southern Districts Spartans to a three-peat of QBL championships from 2017-2019.

Following Stephens’ efforts in the 2017 season, where her side went undefeated (21-0), she was awarded the Basketball Queensland Female Coach of the Year and the QBL women’s Coach of the Year.

Stephens is also involved as an assistant coach at state level, winning a silver medal with the U20 Queensland women in 2018, and more recently serving as assistant coach of the U20 Queensland men in 2019 and 2020, winning a silver medal in 2020.
