Buccs hand Giants second home loss of weekend

The Goldfields Giants might have been at home, but it was the Geraldton Buccaneers who were the fresher as they came into Kalgoorlie and left with Sunday’s 100-86 victory.

The Giants were back home at Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium attempting to bounce back from the previous night’s loss to the Cockburn Cougars while the Buccs arrived in Kalgoorlie to play their only game of the round.

The Buccaneers were without Liam Hunt who is currently in the United States and 421-game veteran Aaron Ralph also didn’t play, and the Giants made the hot start determined to make up for the previous night’s loss.

Goldfields led by as much as 11 points in the opening period and were back up 10 in the second, but Geraldton worked into the contest and ended up completely turning the tide to lead 50-44 by half-time.

The Buccs then dominated the second half and would lead by as much as 22 points in the third stanza before securing the 14-point victory.

The result improves the Buccaneers to a 9-3 record on the season having won four in-a-row while the Giants slip to 5-8 with the two losses at home this weekend to Cockburn and Geraldton.

Shaun Stewart produced 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the win for the Buccs while knocking down 4/8 from downtown.

Zac Gattorna also put up 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Fletcher Klasztorny 17 points and six boards, Malik Meunier 17 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Ryan Blanchett 11 points, six boards and two assists.

It was a second tough loss at home for the Giants in little over 12 hours with Lafonzo Smith top-scoring again with 21 points and eight rebounds on 9/13 shooting from the floor and 3/3 from beyond the arc.

Michael Dupree produced 18 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals, Damon Ballantyne 16 points and five assists, Kon Anguik 13 points, eight boards, five assists and two steals, and Mayo Malek 12 points, five blocks, four rebounds and three assists.
