NBL1 West Recap | Women's Friday Round 7

The Warwick Senators flexed their muscles of what they will be capable of this NBL1 West Women's season with a big home win over the Perry Lakes Hawks on Friday night while the Willetton Tigers again pulled themselves out of a precarious position.

Fully boosted with Nat Burton, Sam Roscoe and Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard in a star-studded front court, the Warwick Senators proved too strong at home to the Perry Lakes Hawks on Friday night, winning 98-53.

While the front court dominated, it was Chloe Forster and Stacey Barr who scored 19 points apiece and combining to shoot 5/10 from three-point territory. Emma Clarke finished with 16 points for Perry Lakes and Mia Satie 15.

It's now an on-going trend for the Willetton Tigers to get themselves into trouble but overpower their opposition in the fourth quarter. The defending champions did so again on Friday night to beat the Lakeside Lightning 83-74.

Desiree Kelley put up 26 points for Willetton with Alex Sharp adding 13 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. Sara Dickey delivered 21 points for Lakeside.

Round 7 in the NBL1 West Women's competition will continue on Saturday evening at 5pm with the East Perth Eagles taking on the South West Slammers while the Kalamunda Eastern Suns are also hosting the Warwick Senators.

Then at 5.30pm, the Goldfields Giants are at home to the Joondalup Wolves before at 6pm, the Perry Lakes Hawks will be hosting the Perth Redbacks and the Rockingham Flames at home to the Cockburn Cougars.

WARWICK SENATORS 98 defeated PERRY LAKES HAWKS 53

The Warwick Senators and Perry Lakes Hawks did battle for the second time already this season, and it was a fully loaded Warwick Senators who proved too strong on Friday night at Warwick Stadium.

The two teams opened the season back in Round 1 at Bendat Basketball Centre with the Senators finishing strongly for the five-point win but they were further boosted personnel wise on Friday night, and it showed.

With Nat Burton and Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard joined in the front court by former Lakeside championship winner Sam Roscoe, and with the shooting prowess of Stacey Barr and Chloe Forster, and leadership of Nicole Jorre de St Jorre, they proved too strong for the Hawks.

Warwick started well at the defensive end in particular holding Perry Lakes to just the 11 points in the first term to be on top by six at quarter-time.

Warwick's offence then got rolling in the second quarter with 29 points and that saw them take a 46-31 advantage into the half-time break.

It was more of the same in the second half with 28 points to 10 from the Senators in the third quarter, and 24 points again to 12 in the fourth as they ended up winning 98-53.

The result improves the Senators to a 5-2 record on the season while the Hawks slip to 3-4 in coach Craig Mansfield's first season at the helm.

Stacey Barr finished the evening with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Senators with Chloe Forster adding 19 points, five boards and four assists while hitting 3/5 from three-point range.

Nat Burton was playing against the local team she's spent most of her life with as well and was impressive for Warwick inside with 14 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists on 7/10 shooting.

Sam Roscoe made her first appearance of the season as well for the Senators and put up 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists with Nicole Jorre de St Jorre delivering 11 points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds.

Emma Clarke top-scored for Perry Lakes with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots with Mia Satie contributing 15 points and seven boards, and Annika Renkema six points and two rebounds.

 

WILLETTON TIGERS 83 defeated LAKESIDE LIGHTNING 74

The Willetton Tigers continued their season long trait of coming from behind to win on Friday night against the Lakeside Lightning at Willetton Basketball Stadium.

The defending champions were back on their home floor to open Round 7 of the 2022 season and started strongly with 18 points to 12 in the opening quarter.

Lakeside had come to play, though, and were able to turn the tide in the second quarter with 23 points to 19 to close to within just two points at the half-time break.

The Lightning continued to take it right up to the Tigers in the third quarter with another 22 points to 17 with Taryn Priestly helping them to a three-point lead having joined Lakeside this season after being part of Willetton's championship in 2021.

However, not for the first time this season the Tigers found themselves down at three quarter-time and then produced a dominant final period to end up with an impressive victory.

Willetton put up 29 points to 17 to go from trailing by three going into the final period to end up winning 83-74 to improve to 6-1 on the season while the Lightning are now 3-4.

Desiree Kelley continued her standout season so far for Willetton on the back of becoming a championship captain last year. She finished the night with 26 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Emma Gandini also had 17 points, five rebounds and four steals with Alex Sharp contributing 13 points, 15 rebounds and six assists, Imogen Ayliffe nine points and nine boards, and Hayley Winter eight points and five assists.

It might have been a loss for the Lightning, but there was a lot to be heartened by in their performance with Sara Dickey leading the way with 21 points and six rebounds.

Opal Mader added 18 points and five rebounds with Caitie Jones contributing 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Mia Jacobs eight points, four boards and two blocked shots.
