The Brisbane Capitals women’s team have come off the back of two straight road wins in the NBL1 North and are setting themselves up in the early stages of the season.

The Capitals secured two crucial wins on the road in Round 3 which saw them jump to fifth on the ladder with a 3-1 record.

NBL1 North analyst Jon Guarna emphasised the importance of the road wins in the early stages of this season and applauded the efforts the squad showcased, to achieve a 2-0 at the end of the round.

“That’s a really good win for the Capitals, going into Townsville and picking up the win. Adding onto that and winning in Cairns, the Caps’ have set themselves up pretty well here in the early start,” Guarna said on The NBL1 Show.

The Capitals put on a killer show in Cairns against the Dolphins, they won 94-73 with a standout shooting performance across the board.

“Mia Loyd had a huge game, Abby Cubillo also had a big game,” Guarna said.

“In that game against Cairns, all five of their starters scored in double figures which is super, super impressive.”

Abby Cubillo top-scored against the Dolphins with 28 points, six rebounds and three assists. NBL1 North’s Player of the Week Mia Loyd closely trailed Cubillo with 26 points and an impressive 12 rebounds.

With a short turnaround, the Capitals headed straight to Townsville to take on the Flames where WNBL championship player Steph Reid was back in action.

The Capitals showed no signs on intimidation with another great performance which saw them claim a three-point win.

“It was a little bit tougher for them down in Townsville, the Flames brought back Steph Reid. But credit to Brisbane, they fought tooth and nail and they came away with a three-point win,” Guarna said.

The Brisbane Capitals are back at home tonight for their first game of ANZAC Round against the Mackay Meteorettes.

The game will tip-off at 6:00pm AEST. Watch the game live and free on the NBL1 Website and NBL1 App.
