The 21-year-old Gaze recently tried out with the Tasmania JackJumpers, but wasn’t signed to a development contract.
After a strong NBL1 South season with the Melbourne Tigers, where he averaged over 12 points per game as a 21-year-old, Gaze believes he is on the NBL bubble.
“Now I feel like I’m at a level where I’m only an arm’s reach away from the NBL,” Gaze told Newscorp.
“It motivates me even more because you know how special it is to be a part of the league.”
Gaze added the growing trajectory of the NBL is another driving factor in his dream of playing in the league.
“Even the articles about Larry (Kestelman) wanting the NBL to overtake cricket in the summer, and that isn’t that far off,” he said.
“The sport is going in the right direction, so hopefully I can get there while it is still going upwards.”
Adding muscle is a key focus for Gaze this summer and he will work with long-time NBL and WNBL strength coach Bruce Gray to help achieve that goal.
The Gaze name is synonymous with the NBL. Andrew won seven league MVP’s and two championships, while Mason’s grandfather, Lindsay, is a three-time Coach of the Year.
The winner of the league MVP is awarded the Andrew Gaze Trophy, while the Coach of the Year wins the Lindsay Gaze Trophy.
