There were Sunday NBL1 North wins for the Brisbane Capitals and Northside Wizards women, and USC Rip City and North Gold Coast Seahawks men in Round 2 action.

Sunday's NBL1 North women's games saw the Brisbane Capitals defeat USC Rip City 78-64 and the Northside Wizards beat the North Gold Coast Seahawks 92-65.

Then in the men's matches on Sunday, Rip City beat the Capitals 99-88 and the Seahawks beat the Wizards 83-68.

WOMEN

Capitals with first win at expense of Rip City

The Brisbane Capitals scored their first win of the NBL1 North season and handed USC Rip City a first defeat with Sunday's 78-64 victory.

Brisbane lost to the Northside Wizards in the opening round with Rip City beating the Sunshine Coast Phoenix, and then on Sunday at USC Sports Stadium, it was the Capitals who worked on top to lead 39-30 by half-time.

They built on that advantage through the second half to win by 14 points with Mia Loyd the star with 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Steph Collins added 11 points and seven rebounds, Abby Cubillo 11 points and seven boards, and Bronte Corke 10 points.

Carlie Smith top-scored for Rip City with 23 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals with Steph Bairstow contributing 14 points, four boards and three assists.

Wizards continue hot early season form

The Northside Wizards made it quite the emphatic weekend backing up a Saturday night win by thrashing the North Gold Coast Seahawks 92-65 on Sunday.

On the back of beating the Logan Thunder at home on Saturday night, the Wizards backed up on Sunday at Runaway Bay Stadium in impressive fashion.

The Wizards led by four points at quarter-time, 12 at half-time and then 15 at three quarter-time before another 27 points to 15 in the fourth to claim the 27-point victory.

Nadeen Payne was a dominant presence for the Wizards with 24 points and five rebounds on 10/13 shooting with Courtney Woods adding another 21 points, eight boards and five assists fresh off the WNBL championship with the Townsville Fire.

Lil Dart added 14 points and four rebounds for Northside with AJ Johnson contributing eight points, nine boards, four steals and three assists.

It was another tough outing for the Seahawks despite Bride Kennedy-Hopoate finishing with 19 points and seven rebounds, and Erin Riley 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Perth Lynx WNBL guard and NBL1 West champion and Best Defensive Player Emma Gandini had her moments too with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.

MEN

Rip City score first win at expense of Capitals

USC Rip City have opened their account for the 2023 NBL1 North season beating the Brisbane Capitals 99-88 on Sunday.

Both teams were chasing first wins of the season going into the Round 2 contest at USC Sports Stadium, and it was the third quarter where Rip City pulled away with 27 points to 18 to end up winning by 11 from there.

It was an impressive shooting display from Rip City going 14/39 from three-point range as a team with Brandon Wood going 4/6 on his own for 22 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Tasmania JackJumpers starter Matt Kenyon added 21 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals with Eric McAlister contributing 16 points and six rebounds, Corey Shervill 14 points and nine boards, and Verle Williams 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.

Malok Majak ended the game with 26 points and 15 rebounds for Brisbane while Geordan Papacostas added 13 points and four boards, Lachie Dent 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Anthony Kopcikas 11 points and three steals.

Seahawks hand Wizards first defeat of NBL1 North season

The North Gold Coast Seahawks handed the Northside Wizards their first defeat of NBL1 North with an 83-68 home win on Sunday afternoon.

It's been an impressive start to the NBL1 North season from the Wizards led by Brisbane Bullets NBL import Andrew White III, but the Seahawks came out firing on Sunday at Runaway Bay Stadium.

North Gold Coast build on their lead right throughout the afternoon and then it was three huge triples in the fourth quarter from David Gurney that sealed the deal for the Seahawks.

Kody Stattmann finished with 21 points and nine rebounds for North Gold Coast while shooting 4/8 from deep with Biwali Bayles terrific with 19 points and 11 assists.

Gurney added 17 points with 4/6 shooting from long-range with Aiden Krause contributing 12 points, and Majok Majok four points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.

It was a first loss of 2023 for the Wizards despite 23 points, six rebounds and two assists from Andrew White III. Lual Diing added 17 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, DeShawn Ross-Paiwan 12 points, four boards, three assists and two steals, and Cameron Healy 11 points and seven rebounds.
