In some Sunday hoops action, the NBL1 South had six games across the day! Check out how the games went below:
Women’s
Frankston Blues (62) def by Kilsyth (84)
Lauren Scherf made her return from the Commonwealth Games and made an instant impact, she had a game-high 24 points as the Cobras took care of the Blues in Frankston.
Darcee Garbin was great, coming off the Opals camp she had 21 points and seven rebounds while the rest of the team struggled. Garbin herself only shot 34 percent from the field while the Blues shot 37 percent total.
Waverley Falcons (55) def by Ringwood Hawks (91)
The Falcons could not defend home court against Ringwood has the second on the ladder Hawks smashed Waverley in the Sunday clash.
It was an outstanding performance from Digna Strautmane who had 26 points and six rebounds in the dominant win. Also coming back from the Commonwealth Games was Marena Whittle who had 23 points and seven rebounds in the win.
The Falcons only shot 28 percent from the field, as Carely Ernst led her team in scoring with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Melbourne Tigers (59) def by Ballarat Miners (85)
The Tigers could not handle the Opals duo of Jade Melbourne and Zitina Aokuso at home on Sunday.
Melbourne is back from the Opals and put up 25 points with eight rebounds in the win, while Aokuso had 15 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the game. Without Tess Heal, who has started her collegiate career, the Tiger offence has been lacking. They only had 15 assists in the game compared to Ballarat's 25.
Men’s
Frankston Blues (92) def by Kilsyth Cobras (101)
The Cobras give the Blues trouble on their home court as Kilsyth’s Corey Jeffs scored 23 points with six rebounds in the game. The Blues were just coming off a difficult Wildcard win and it showed, Blues star Dillon Sith made 1/7 shots while Lachlan Barker only made 5/14 in the game.
Frankston Adrio Bailey had a double-double but the Cobras remain one of the best teams in South and today proved why.
Waverley (90) def by Ringwood (96)
Waverley gave the Hawks a test as the Falcon’s Daniel Dillon had 26 points in the close loss. On the other side, Tim Guers had his own 26 points but added seven rebounds, while Emmett Narr had a near triple-double of eight points, seven rebounds and 10 assists.
The game came down to Ringwood’s Shaun Clarke, who made 4/4 free throws which made the game a two-possession difference in the final moments.
The Hawks sit 10th on the South ladder and will face the ninth Knox Raiders next week in the final round of NBL1 South.
Melbourne Tigers (86) def Ballarat Miners (78)
In a spectacular win, the Tigers have beaten the Miners on their home court in a close battle. Mason Gaze stood out with his almost triple-double of 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists as Melbourne did well to defend the Miners’ stars.
Ballarat’s swing piece was Koen Sapwell, who had 19 points off the bench in the close game. Preston Bungei held the team together with his nine points, six rebounds and four assists but the Tigers coming off a loss to Bendigo were not letting this one slip.
